What languages did you study at UNC and what were your most memorable moments from those global language courses?

I studied Arabic at UNC. Some of my most memorable experiences came from the Arabic-speaking community outside of class. We’d gather in places like Davis Library, Shahrazed, or each other’s homes, where language students naturally formed a supportive community. This sense of camaraderie was invaluable, creating a strong network that defined my experience at UNC.

Did you study abroad or do an internship abroad and, if so, what about these experiences impacted your bachelor’s degree the most?

I studied abroad in Amman, Jordan, in Summer 2024. This experience gave me a stronger command of Arabic and a firsthand understanding of the business environment in Jordan. It expanded my academic journey with insights into Middle Eastern economies and consumer habits, which are useful as I prepare for a career that intersects with global markets.

How did the study of these languages shape your overall academic training at Carolina?

Arabic has been foundational in my academic journey at Carolina. Learning it was transformative; I came to love learning itself. It was one of the first subjects I could apply directly in real-life situations. Each new phrase or skill was like a key unlocking a different perspective on the world, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

How has language study at Carolina shaped your outlook and professional aspirations following graduation?

Studying Arabic has helped shape my career goals. With consulting as my focus, I now have a clearer view of the key issues facing the Middle East. My time abroad gave me a realistic view of life and work in the region, solidifying my interest in projects that foster development and sustainable growth.

Is there anything else you’d like to add that you believe new students should know about your global language experience at Carolina?

I’d advise students to go beyond the classroom when it comes to language study. Get involved in the cultural aspects related to the language; if you have any personal connection to it, lean into that. This makes learning more enjoyable and motivating. Language skills are invaluable beyond Carolina, so aim to truly immerse yourself, not just complete requirements!
