What languages did you study at UNC and what were your most memorable moments from those global language courses?
I studied French here at UNC. Some of my most memorable moments were when I was able to move past focusing on the grammar, and was able to have conversations with people, as well as write in a manner that easily conveyed what I wanted to say.
Did you study abroad or do an internship abroad and, if so, what about these experiences impacted your bachelor’s degree the most?
I studied abroad in Montpellier over the summer after my sophomore year. This had a profound impact on my bachelor’s degree and was one of the highlights of my undergraduate career. It not only significantly improved my speaking and oral comprehension, but also provided me with such a unique opportunity to experience a different culture. It gave me a new perspective on many different aspects of life that have been invaluable in my academic and personal growth. That is overall what made it possible for me to get a major in French.
How did the study of French shape your overall academic training at Carolina?
Studying French at UNC enriched my academic experience and made me a more well-rounded student. My second major is astrophysics, so I rarely had time for classes outside of stem. Majoring in French allowed for me to explore many different areas of interest and was almost like a break from the rest of my work. I think becoming more culturally aware through my studies deepened my appreciation for topics that I otherwise would not have gotten a chance to study.
How has language study at Carolina shaped your outlook and professional aspirations following graduation?
My language study has greatly shaped my aspirations following graduation because I am more open to international opportunities. I have become more interested in pursuing graduate school abroad, and feel more comfortable with being in another country particularly after my study abroad experience. I am more confident in my ability to adapt to different environments and have more doors opened due to my studies.
Is there anything else you’d like to add that you believe new students should know about your global language experience at Carolina?
I think that new Carolina students should know that the global languages have much more to them than the basic grammar that is required for graduation. It leads to some of the most unique experiences, relationships, and career opportunities that are well worth exploring.
